It seems
to me that since different states all seem to have
different standards for maximum speed limits they must know
something about their residents.
In Michigan, there are long stretches of road
that are 70mph, we Michiganites are obviously capable of diving that
speed safely & wisely. The state has decreed it so.
When traveling into Indiana, as soon as one
crosses the border, the speed limit drops to 55mph.
Not because of
more traffic or congestion, often the state line is across the same
farm. Obviously it is not the environment that dictates the big drop
in speed. Should you slam on your brakes at the state line to comply
with the 15mph difference? The state of Indiana in its benevolent
wisdom has made the decision that its population CANNOT BE TRUSTED
ABOVE 55. Who are we to argue with them?
It does seem only fair to me that as licensed
Michigan drivers, competent and able to drive at high speed, we should
not be held to the same limit as our sister state. We have been
practicing at 70 mph, we are not amateurs. The fact that we are still
alive proves that we can do it and do it well.
This of course means that the residents of
Montana get to drive any speed they choose, for of course their state
has given them that privilege. Lucky cowboys.
