He had no apparent kin but was a regular at some of the local spots. Unfortunately, his health deteriorated and his independence kept him from seeking the medical help he needed. The community of Union Pier is filled with kind hearts who left food for him, helped keep his place clean, and provided a place for him to eat and socialize without tapping into his meager income. This December, Oakie passed away in a hospital. With friends. Not alone. A memorial was sponsored for him at his favorite spot, The Red Arrow Roadhouse, and his friends still remember him. You too can see his picture with his horse and his personalized bar stool at the Roadhouse. This small town takes care
of its own. |
