Street
corners have gotten very bad press in recent years. They seem to attract all kinds of
illegal and nefarious doings. Why people would want their illicit dealings played out
under a spotlight escapes me. |

The town of New Buffalo has one stoplight. It's on Red Arrow Highway and Whittaker. This particular intersection boasts an unusual nocturnal gathering. On summer evenings, two men , two lawn chairs, a dog and a red Radio Flyer wagon arrange themselves on the southwest corner and happily wave to any car that waves to them. They are still there when the restaurants and bars close down, still cheerfully greeting all comers. I don't know who they are and how and why they started their street corner vigil, but I know that all seems right with the night when I can wave to strangers on warm summer nights when the windows are down and my arm is surfing through the currents of air. I think this year I'm going to ask, "So what'cha doin, guys?" Maybe bring a biscuit for the dog.
